Homeowners: know which home robot fits your home — and which ones to skip.

BotShelf reviews robot vacuums, mowers, and pool cleaners with a focus on the conditions that matter: pet hair, thick carpet, uneven lawns, and real pools. Our testing program covers one robot per month. Every hands-on review includes documented findings, including what went wrong.

A home robot is an expensive purchase to get wrong.

  • Your yard isn't a test track. A robot mower might look fine in a product video but struggle with your slope, roots, or uneven edges.
  • Every roundup seems to have a different winner. It's hard to tell which recommendations come from hands-on testing and which come from specifications or sponsorships.
  • Your home has specific problems. Pet hair, muddy paws, thick carpet, narrow passages, and pool steps matter more than a generic feature list.
  • Research takes time. When you're considering a $1,200 purchase, you want to understand the tradeoffs before you commit.

BotShelf has a simple editorial rule: if we tested it, we show you what happened. If we haven't tested it, we label the coverage as research-based. Our plan is to purchase one robot each month, use it in realistic conditions, film the test, and publish the test log alongside the review. No undocumented hands-on claims. No ratings invented to fill an empty page.

The category hubs

Every category separates Tested Reviews from Research Roundups. Tested reviews require documented hands-on testing with a published Test Log. Research roundups compare published specifications and buyer feedback, with sources clearly identified. Specifications quoted in a research roundup are manufacturer-stated figures — we label them that way because we have not measured them ourselves. At launch, category hubs begin with research roundups while the test program gets started. Each hub also carries a living comparison table: when a new test lands, the table changes, and the change is dated.

Robot vacuums for real floors, real messes.

We evaluate pet-hair pickup, carpet performance, hard floors, navigation, and the daily work of keeping a robot running.

Illustrative example — not tested yet
  • [EXAMPLE — product placeholder: flagship self-emptying robot vacuum] — Planned checks: pet-hair pickup on carpet versus hard flooring, dock reliability, and operating noise.

No ratings appear on illustrative products. A TESTED label is added only when a published Test Log supports it.

Robot mowers for lawns that aren't perfectly flat.

We focus on slopes, tree roots, rain behavior, uneven edges, and the setup work that product pages often gloss over.

One robot a month. A published test plan. Results you can inspect.

  1. We purchase the test unit. Our planned testing model uses retail purchases rather than manufacturer loans or conditional review units.

  2. We run repeatable tests. Each category has a published test plan covering relevant conditions, such as pet-hair pickup, slope climbing, runtime, and obstacle avoidance. Products within a category face the same core checks.

  3. We film the test and document what happened. Every monthly test is filmed — setup, failures, and cleanup included — and published as a long-form video. Reviews on this site include the raw test log. Failures stay in the review.

  4. We separate testing from commissions. Affiliate payments are disclosed next to the links that earn them and do not determine review outcomes or rankings.

  5. We label research clearly. If we haven't handled a product ourselves, we call the coverage research-based and show the sources. Specifications in research coverage are manufacturer-stated figures, attributed to the manufacturer — not measurements we took. We never present research as a hands-on test.

The purchase calendar (our published plan): the monthly purchase rotates with the buying seasons — robot mowers in late winter and spring (February–April), pool cleaners in spring into early summer (March–June), and robot vacuums in the fall (September–November). Between purchase windows, we publish research roundups and keep the comparison tables current. This site's job is the record: the Test Logs and the living ranking and comparison tables that the test videos point to.

What we're testing this month: Nothing is labeled TESTED yet, and we'd rather say that plainly. The test program starts with unit #1. Until its Test Log is published here, every comparison on this site is a RESEARCH ROUNDUP, labeled as such.

How BotShelf makes money

BotShelf may earn a commission when you purchase through affiliate links on this site, at no additional cost to you. Affiliate commissions help fund our testing program. They do not determine our recommendations or rankings. We do not accept payment to change a review.

This disclosure appears near the homepage hero, on review and comparison pages, and alongside affiliate links — not only here. Wherever a recommendation appears with a buy link, a short disclosure sits next to it. Research-based comparisons are labeled as such, and we never claim hands-on testing without a documented Test Log.

At launch, our affiliate programs are still being approved, so the buy-link slots on this page are marked placeholders. A slot only becomes a live link after its program is approved, with its disclosure already beside it.

The Robot Buying Scorecard cover — score any robot against your home in 10 minutes

Score any robot against your home in about 10 minutes.

The scorecard is an interactive tool on this site — not a file to print and guess at. You enter your home profile (floors, pets, obstacles; lawn size and slope; pool type and debris), type in up to three robots you're considering, and score each one 1–5 on the ten things that decide whether a robot works in your home: fit for your surfaces, pet-hair or debris reality, obstacle handling, runtime versus your space, noise, maintenance hassle, navigation smarts, price versus the chore it replaces, support and warranty, and your own honest dealbreaker check.

Totals add up live as you score, and your scored result appears right here on this page as soon as you finish — no waiting on an email to see it. If you'd like the monthly test-results email after that, the sign-up is below. One email a month. Unsubscribe anytime.

The scorecard never invents data: you supply your home and your scores; BotShelf supplies the method. Then check your winner against our tested reviews and labeled research roundups before you buy.

The Robot Buying Scorecard

Score any robot against your home in about 10 minutes.

0  How to use this

Pick your category. Answer the questions about your home. Score each robot you're considering from 1 (poor fit) to 5 (strong fit) on every row. The totals add up as you go — highest total is your match. Then check our review or research roundup for your winner before you buy.

1  Your home, first

Robots don't do stairs. If your robot has to cover two floors, plan on carrying it — or score that honestly in row 10.

2  Score your shortlist (1–5 each)

Criterion
1. Fit for my floorsDoes it actually handle the surfaces I have?
2. Pet-hair realityWill it pick up what my home actually produces?
3. Obstacle handlingWill it survive my cables, shoes, and kid clutter?
4. Runtime vs. my spaceCan it finish my area on one charge?
5. Noise levelCan it run while I'm home / at night?
6. Maintenance hassleHow often do I empty, clean, or replace things?
7. Mapping/navigation smartsDoes it learn my home or bounce around randomly?
8. Price vs. what it replacesIs the cost sane next to the chore it takes over?
9. Support & warrantyWhat happens when it breaks in year two?
10. Honest dealbreaker checkDoes it survive the dealbreaker I wrote above?

3  The 3 most expensive mistakes

1. Buying for the house you wish you had — the open floor plan in the ad — instead of the house you live in: pet hair, clutter, thresholds.
2. Trusting star ratings without reading what the 1-star reviews actually say. The failure you'll have is in there.
3. Paying for mapping features your home doesn't need — and skipping the ones it does.

Pick My Robot — a written recommendation, done for you

Some shortlists don't settle themselves. If you've scored your options and you're still stuck between two or three robots, we will do the research legwork and give you a straight answer in writing.

What it is: a research-based recommendation. We work from your home profile, published specifications, documented test results, and buyer feedback. It is honestly labeled research-based — it is not a hands-on test of the robots on your list, and we will never present it as one.

How it works:

  1. You check out. The confirmation page tells you to email your home profile and the robots you're considering to chiticohq+botshelf@zohomail.com. That email is the intake — fixed contents, so nothing gets missed.
  2. We research your shortlist against your home — fit, tradeoffs, and the dealbreakers that matter for your floors, lawn, or pool.
  3. Within 3 business days of your email arriving, you receive a written recommendation by email.

Fixed scope, both tiers:

  • One written deliverable naming one pick and one runner-up per category, with the reasons and the tradeoffs stated plainly.
  • A current price, stock, and support check on the pick, done as part of the research.
  • No revisions and no follow-up thread. The deliverable is the written recommendation.
  • No calls, ever. Everything is written and asynchronous.
  • The affiliate relationship is disclosed again inside the deliverable itself, next to any buy link it contains.
  • Refund term: if we cannot give you a clear recommendation for your home, we refund the full fee. No forms, no argument.

FAQ

Which robot vacuum should I buy?

Start with your floor types, pets, home layout, and budget. The free Robot Buying Scorecard helps you compare any robot against those needs. Then use our documented reviews and clearly labeled research roundups to evaluate your options.

Have you tested [product I own]?

Only if it appears in our Test Log with a documented test date. If a product appears in a research roundup, our comparison uses published specifications and buyer feedback. The page will say so, and any specification we quote is a manufacturer-stated figure, not our measurement.

Do you take money from brands to rank them higher?

No. We may earn affiliate commissions from purchases made through our links, but commissions do not determine rankings. We do not sell paid placement within editorial reviews.

Why only one robot a month?

Because useful testing takes time. Purchasing, setting up, running repeatable tests, filming them, documenting failures, and publishing the evidence all require attention. We'd rather publish one properly documented review than a stack of reviews we can't substantiate.

What are your affiliate commission rates?

Rates vary by program. Every commission is disclosed on the page where the link appears, next to the link itself.

Can a brand send you a robot to test?

No. We buy our test units at retail. It's slower and it costs us money, and it's why a ranking here can't be bought. If that policy ever changes, the change will be announced on this page, and any review of a manufacturer-provided unit will be labeled as such. We do not offer paid reviews.

What exactly do I get with Pick My Robot?

A written recommendation by email within 3 business days of your intake email: one pick and one runner-up, with the reasons, the tradeoffs, and a current price, stock, and support check on the pick. After checkout, the confirmation page tells you to email your home profile and shortlist to chiticohq+botshelf@zohomail.com. Single Category ($49) covers one category — one pick, one runner-up. Whole Home ($139) covers all three categories — one pick and one runner-up in each, in one written deliverable. The scope is fixed: no revisions, no follow-up thread, no calls.

Is Pick My Robot a hands-on test of my shortlist?

No. It is research-based — your home profile, published specifications, documented test results, and buyer feedback. We label it that way on this page and inside the deliverable.

What if you can't recommend one?

Then we say so in writing and refund the full fee.

Do you do calls or video chats?

No. BotShelf sells written work, delivered asynchronously. That's deliberate — it keeps the price fixed and the recommendation documented.

Know what you're buying before it arrives at your door.
